Roger Sawyer

Roger Sawyer of Nocona, TX - pilot, dairy farmer, life insurance and real estate salesman, rancher, husband, father, and friend - died Saturday, August 13, 2016. He was 91 years old. Roger was born September 22, 1924, to Lyle and Leta Sawyer in Lewistown, Montana. The family moved to the north Texas area when Roger was 3 years old. After serving in the Army Air Corp in WWII, he married Oleta Marie Henley of Saint Jo, TX, August 28, 1945, in Lincoln, Nebraska. From a young age it became evident that Roger loved people. He enjoyed those around him and listening to their stories. He carried a smile and warm greeting wherever he went and never met a stranger. Roger was fascinated by philosophy, geography, and the natural sciences, and often led rousing family conversations on these as well as other topics. Roger is survived by his three children: Roger Warren Sawyer of Dickinson, TX; Barbara Yeargin of Colleyville, TX; Philip Sawyer of Kingwood, TX and their spouses; six grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Roger was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Oleta Marie (Henley) Sawyer; his brothers Russell and Archie, as well as his parents Lyle and Leta Sawyer of Nocona. At Roger�s request, his body was donated to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for the advancement of science. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 19, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church of Nocona. In lieu of flowers, you may make memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Nocona, Hospice of Wichita Falls or a charity of your choice. Scott-Morris Funeral Home will be helping with arrangements.
